Dr. Michael Osterholm Honored by AMA

Congratulations are in order. The American Medical Association's prestigious Award for Outstanding Government Service has been presented to Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota. See the School of Public Health's announcement. The AMA award recognizes Dr. Osterholm for his public health awareness efforts during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Institute on the Environment Begins Recruiting for Postdoctoral Fellows

The UMN Institute on the Environment has begun recruiting a second cohort of IonE Postdoctoral Fellows. The IonE is searching for Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidates interested in interdisciplinary academic research and community-engaged scholarship with a focus on solutions-oriented research in sustainability to support an equitable and just transition for all. CIDRAP Launches Effort to Prepare for Possible Chronic Wasting Disease Spillover

The University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, a Member Center of the Consortium on Law and Values, has launched a multi-country effort to prepare for a possible chronic wasting disease spillover from deer. The Center has assembled five working groups and tapped 67 experts from seven countries to help in the effort.

Center for Animal Health and Food Safety Receives Grant Award

The University of Minnesota's Center for Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) within the College of Veterinary Medicine has received a seven-year, $4.99 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will help support the capacity building of veterinary services throughout East Africa. Through workforce development and group training, the program hopes to enhance animal health and food safety in the region.

Bioethics Community Loses Expert in Pediatric Ethics

The Consortium on Law and Values mourns the Dec. 30 passing of Donald Brunnquell, PhD, MA, LP, an expert in pediatric ethics. Dr. Brunnquell served as Director of the Office of Ethics at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota for 23 years. He was also an Affiliate Faculty member in the University of Minnesota’s Center for Bioethics, where he taught Pediatric Bioethics, as well as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychology.

Co-Chair joins Consortium leadership team

We are excited to welcome Francis X. Shen, JD, PhD, to a new role as Co-Chair of the Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences. “I am delighted to welcome Francis to this leadership role,” said Consortium Chair Susan M. Wolf, JD. “Professor Shen is a long-time colleague and grants partner, who brings extraordinary expertise on the ethical, legal, and societal issues raised by neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

UMN Researchers to Play Key Role in Study of Early Brain and Child Development

The co-directors of the University of Minnesota's Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain (MIDB), a Consortium member center, will play a key role in the largest long-term study of early brain and child development in the United States. Michael Georgieff, along with Sylvia Wilson of the Institute of Child Development, is among the principal investigators for the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD)

The National Academies Host Workshop on Leading a Lab for Responsible Research, Dec. 4 and 5, 2023

On December 4 and 5, 2023, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) hosted a virtual workshop titled "On Leading a Lab: Strengthening Scientific Leadership in Responsible Research".  This program is for research leaders who direct laboratories, centers, departments, or collaborations.
