Proposals for the Responsible Use of Racial and Ethnic Categories in Biomedical Research: Where Do We Go From Here?

In recent years, tremendous controversy has erupted over whether to continue the use of racial and ethnic population categories in biomedical research, and if so, how. Researchers, community members, scientific journal editors, and federal agencies have struggled with questions of how to define these categories, whether they are useful, in what kinds of research, and with what problems.
