Angela Birnbaum, PhD, FAES, has co-authored a research article that surveyed nursing home medical directors about current nursing home care practices for residents who suffer seizures. Published in Epilepsy & Behavior, Overview of Acute Seizure Management in US Nursing Homes suggests a lack of uniformity in the industry when responding to those experiencing seizures, which puts patients at increased risk. The publication identifies several areas of focus for improving seizure management in nursing home settings. It also advocates for the use of Acute Seizure Action Plans (ASAPs), similar to those successfully used in pediatric care, to improve seizure outcomes, decrease morbidity and enhance quality of life for nursing home residents. Birnbaum, co-founder of the Center for Clinical and Cognitive Neuropharmacology, a Consortium Member Center, was joined by UMN Professor Ilo E. Leppik, MD, and student Yuhan Long, among others, in the research.
