While COVID-19 and its impacts have dominated the public health landscape since it emerged in late 2019, it is not the first or only pathogenic coronavirus to impact humans in recent years. In a recent commentary published in Vaccine, experts from the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) and the Mayo Clinic identify the limitations of current coronavirus vaccines and challenges of developing improved coronavirus vaccines. They also announce that CIDRAP has begun developing a research and development roadmap for creating a vaccine that would be broadly protective against all coronaviruses. The roadmap will be shared for public comments in October 2022 and finalized in early 2023. Lead author Kristine Moore is medical director of CIDRAP; CIDRAP Director Michael Osterholm and Deputy Director Eve Lackritz also contributed to the article. CIDRAP is a Consortium member center.
