The National Academies Host Workshop on Leading a Lab for Responsible Research, Dec. 4 and 5, 2023

On December 4 and 5, 2023, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) hosted a virtual workshop titled "On Leading a Lab: Strengthening Scientific Leadership in Responsible Research".  This program is for research leaders who direct laboratories, centers, departments, or collaborations.  Research leaders face expanding expectations for ensuring scientific integrity and ethical conduct in their research, and must fulfill those expectations under evolving oversight structures and regulations.  The workshop explored innovative approaches to help research leaders navigate RCR within this new and changing landscape.  Consortium Chair, Susan Wolf, JD, moderated a session on “What is Scientific Leadership for Ethical & Responsible Research? Why is it Important?” with speakers Maria Zuber, Vice President for Research, MIT, Michael Witherell, Director, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Gerald F. Goodwin, Chief Scientist, U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Science.
