Brian Herman, vice president for research at the University of Minnesota, was featured today in the Washington Post describing the dearth of funding available to young scientists. Only 1 in 6 NIH grant proposals is awarded, and the average age at which researchers obtain their first NIH grant is 42. Concerns run deeply enough that the U.S. Congress recently released a proposal that would require the NIH to set aside more money for leading-edge research by emerging scientists.
