Event Description

Prof. Andrews discussed the debate over embryonic stem cell research. Because there is no social, moral, or legal accord on the status of the embryo, tremendous controversy surrounds this area of research. Prof. Andrews analyzed applicable state and federal law and addressed concerns about coercion, informed consent, and privacy in the use of embryo stem cells.

Speaker Biography

Lori B. Andrews, JD, is the Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. She is also a Senior Scholar of the Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. The ABA Journal describes her as "a lawyer with a literary bent who has the scientific chops to rival any CSI investigator." Prof. Andrews is an internationally recognized expert on emerging technologies.
