Center For Bioethics Affiliate Wolfe Co-Authors “Antiracism: An Ethical Imperative”

Thursday, August 24, 2023

Ian Wolfe, PhD, MA, RN, is the lead author of a recent article in Pediatrics that reports on the results of an ethics conference workshop designed to identify and analyze policies, procedures, and practices in pediatric hospitals that contribute to structural racism. Using an antiracist framework, the workshop focused on 21 examples that fell within 7 broader classifications of hospital policy (including policies addressing hospital security and staff safety, patient visitation, behavioral contracts, and medical decision-making). The workshop generated a list of actionable recommendations. Wolfe and co-authors argued that clinical pediatric ethicists are equipped - and obligated - to help dismantle structural racism through policy change within their institutions. Wolfe is an Affiliate Faculty member at the University of Minnesota's Center for Bioethics and is Senior Clinical Ethicist for Children's Minnesota. The Center for Bioethics is a Consortium member center.
