Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD, is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives and Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also Co-Director of the Health Transformation Institute.  Dr. Emanuel is a Special Advisor to the Director General of the World Health Organization, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations. From January 2009 to January 2011, he served as special advisor for health policy to the director of the Office of Management and Budget in the White House. From 1997 to 2011, he was chair of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Emanuel has written and edited 15 books and over 300 scientific articles. He is a regular guest on CNN and MSNBC, and often publishes pieces in the New York Times, The Atlantic, and the Washington Post.
