We are excited to welcome Francis X. Shen, JD, PhD, to a new role as Co-Chair of the Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences. “I am delighted to welcome Francis to this leadership role,” said Consortium Chair Susan M. Wolf, JD. “Professor Shen is a long-time colleague and grants partner, who brings extraordinary expertise on the ethical, legal, and societal issues raised by neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Welcoming Francis as the Consortium’s first Co-Chair immediately adds to our breadth and capabilities.”

Shen is returning to the University of Minnesota as Professor and Solly Robbins Distinguished Research Fellow at the Law School, a Faculty Member in the Graduate Program in Neuroscience, and Director of the Shen Neurolaw Lab.

“I’m thrilled to join Professor Wolf and the Consortium team as Co-Chair,” said Prof. Shen. “I look forward to working with our amazing Member Centers and Faculty Affiliates to continue the Consortium’s innovative work at the intersection of science and society.”

Prior to rejoining the University of Minnesota, Prof. Shen was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School in the Center for Bioethics and in Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry.

Prof. Wolf expressed thanks: “I am deeply gratified that the Consortium members and Executive Committee, plus Vice President Priya and Associate Vice President Kirkpatrick in the Office for Research & Innovation, saw this as a golden opportunity for the Consortium and University. Since its founding in 2000, the Consortium has built a national reputation for leadership on grant-funded research, events, and cross-disciplinary collaboration focused on societal challenges posed by technologies including genomics, bioengineering, and nanotechnologies. With Francis joining the team, our work and partnerships will only grow.”
