Susan M. Wolf, JD, Consortium Chair, and Debra A. DeBruin, PhD, Director of UMN’s Center for Bioethics, a Consortium Member Center, are co-authors of a new article exploring how various states reviewed and revised scarce resource allocation plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lead author is Kirsten A. Riggan, MA, MS, and senior author is Erin S. DeMartino, both of Mayo Clinic. Published in Chest, the official publication of the American College of Chest Physicians. Behind the Scenes: Facilitators and Barriers to Developing State Scarce Resource Allocation Plans for the COVID-19 Pandemic presents an analysis of interviews with dozens of leaders from 34 states. Their findings underscore the challenges faced in developing or updating public health plans while in the midst of a global crisis. The researchers recommend that states establish committees to regularly assess such plans to better prepare for future crises. The study also advocates for enhanced community engagement to include more feedback from representatives of diverse populations.
